Cockling

COCKLING: GOOD PRACTICE GUIDELINES

Fishing for cockles and other shoreline seafood is done on foot by day at low tide during the  spring tides (coefficient minimum of 80) in rocky and / or sandy areas.

Preparation

  • Find out about possible dangers of the fishing location
  • Check the weather forecast
  • Check the safety rating of the fishing area considered (A and B: fishing possible, C and D: no fishing)
  • Consult tide tables to determine the time of low water (take a watch), it is imperative to leave the site 45 minutes after low water 
  • take a mobile phone (the number 1616 is in direct contact with Maritime Rescue (CROSS)).

 

Regulations

Be aware of current regulations (available from the town hall, associations and maritime affairs bureau: 7 rue du Bastion Saint Nicolas, La Rochelle 17000, Tel: 05 46 28): Regulations concern size, authorised gear, closed seasons, areas and quanities taken.

  • Respect the environment: put stones back in their original position
  • Do not leave waste on the foreshore
  • Respect other users
  • Respect professional installations: oyster beds, fish locks (25m distance) 
  • Take only what you will eat with your family
  • In Charente Maritime, the maximum allowed is 5 kg total catch per person per day

Fines of between 70€ and 1500€ may be enforced!
